What is "Flat Rate"?
The most customer friendly method of charging for services available.
Some of the most common businesses that have used flat rate successfully for years are:
Restaurants, auto mechanics, auto body shops, painters, roofers, siding companies, window companies, carpet, vinyl, & ceramic tile companies, cement contractors, ect...
It gives your customer the benefit of making informed decisions!
The Plumbing industry has refused to honor the customer by giving him an accurate pricing guide so that they can know how much the repair or replacement is going to cost. Knowing this information is critical for the customer to make the decision that is best for them (which by the way is usually the one that is also best for us).
Flat Rate has been called many many things, but simply put, it is a method of charging a specific amount of money for a specific task.
Here is an example of Flat Rate Charging:
A restaurant charges a set amount for a spaghetti dinner, and, if you would like a cup of coffee with that, it will be an additional set amount.
The restaurant doesn't give you a time and material estimate on how much the pasta, tomatoes, hamburger, garlic, & bread cost. They don't itemize out how much time they spend cooking the noodles, making the sauce, frying the hamburger, making your plate of spaghetti, or how much time they spend cleaning your dishes & utensils, or how much per hour they charge. They don't itemize out the mark-up on the food that they prepare (if they did, they would have people bringing their own food into the restaurant and wanting the restaurant to prepare it for them).
They Flat Rate the prices - give you "Menu Pricing" - Bid each small task at a uniform price
In a restaurant, you might get a cheeseburger and a coffee, your spouse might get a turkey sandwich and a soda pop, and your friend might get a piece of pie and a coffee. The Flat Rate (Menu Pricing) will list the separate tasks (food dishes) and the separate prices for each to make up the total cost of the visit.
In our industry, there are sometimes many small tasks each with it's own price that are added together to create the total price (Bid).
Example: To replace a basket strainer might have a task for replacing the basket strainer, a separate task to replace the continuous waste, and a separate task to replace the p-trap.
Why should I Flat Rate?
Because it is the only fair way to do business! This allows customers to compare bills and find out that they both got charged the same amount for the same tasks (jobs) and works great with referrals.
Because the customers love it! They can now make intelligent buying decisions based on actual costs.
Because the Technicians become more professional! When asked how much something will cost, instead of saying "I don't know", or "oh this shouldn't be too bad", they can actually give the customer an exact dollar amount!
Because it allows you to be C.O.D. The constant, daily, flow of cash coming in from your Technicians makes a huge difference in your profitability and stability.
Because it empowers your technicians Your Technicians can "bid" jobs while they are at the customers house doing other work and this leads to even more work and more profit.
Because the billing is much quicker and easier The billing is so much easier, it is actually done right at the customers house! This conquers too many other issues to discuss here, but this one thing alone is HUGE!
Because it makes life so much better!
